Database
Administration Service PRG Systems Database Administrators (DBA)
is able to communicate at a variety of levels and more importantly
match their technical knowledge, expertise and experience with
the business realities experienced in the client's organization.
Typical PRG DBA will have:
Hardware Knowledge
The typical PRG DBA goes a long way to meeting the ideal. Clearly
no one will have had prior experience of everything. The inclination
to seek out knowledge and incorporate it effectively is key.
Operating System Knowledge
PRG Systems DBA will be fully experienced in the chosen operating
system. System configuration implementation and implementation
and support of operational policy are within the basic remit.
A further skill is the initiation of investigations into changes
or enhancements that could improve the operation of the installation
overall, with the understanding that the installation is a production
system and that correct planning is a prerequisite to any enhancement.
Database System Knowledge
The PRG DBA knows in detail how the database works and has the
advantage of sharing knowledge, experience and solutions with
the rest of the PRG team. They will also be meticulous in routinely
monitoring the client's complete installation to forestall any
potential problems and to foresee capacity and performance issues
and deal with them before they begin to effect reliability or
performance.
Application Design Appreciation
The PRG DBA will have a working knowledge of systems analysis,
design and software programming and a feeling for how the software
can be effectively deployed. They will be keen and open to increasing
their knowledge by ongoing training or from any other source
and to applying these latest techniques for the benefit of the
client installation. They will have the skill, patience and
perseverance to solve any 'intractable' problems dealing with
all relevant parties as necessary.
User Appreciation
The PRG DBA appreciates the ways and methods of operation, problems
and constraints that users experience and the techniques they
employ to perform their business functions. This understanding
will be translated into an effective deployment strategy and
into corrective actions as and when appropriate.
Experience
The PRG DBA will be fully experienced in all the areas for which
they are responsible particularly in areas in which they are
about to perform changes of hardware structure, operating system
configuration or internal database structures. In the unlikely
event that something does arise for which they do not have the
relevant experience a support member of the PRG team will assist
who has.
Availability
The
PRG DBA will especially be available at any time a client may
have a problem during normal business hours because in the normal
run of events this should not happen and if it does it would
be a true emergency, also out-of-hours to perform off-line functions
like tuning, de-fragmentation, backup monitoring, etc., and
at scheduled times to support periodic business functions i.e.
month and year end.
